How did socialist thinkers’ ideas penetrate through to those whose lives were in need of improvement, to the people, that is, the majority of the French? How were they interpreted by the grass roots? Records of dialogue between an agitator and fellow militants such as that present in Tristan’s correspondence can give us a rare insight into these questions. It is a record of the interface of utopian vision and prosaic or practical discussion about its implementation. The letters studied here are written by activists, committed to furthering the cause of socialism.
