For the Frankfurt School, both communist-run and capitalist-run media were problematic because both were run according to the same managerialist and ‘instrumentalist’ logics, and both excluded oppositional ideas (antitheses). However, Marcuse (1964a) argued that he ‘preferred’ the communist system because it was more obviously repressive. For Marcuse, both the communist and capitalist, liberal varieties of Western technocratic society were ‘one-dimensional’ because they both excluded truly oppositional ideas.
A key issue arising from this model is whether a ‘non-ideological’ state is ever possible. For Marxists (at least up until Althusser), a Marxist re-ordering of society (and re-ordering of power relationships) would produce a ‘classless’ state in which ‘ideology’ would no longer be needed. So it became possible to conceive the ‘end of ideology’. It is possible to use much Marxist work on ‘ideology’ without necessarily assuming that the latter ‘ideal’ should, or can, be brought into being. Gramsci’s work, for example, makes it possible to conceptualize a perpetually-shifting struggle (over resources) leading to the ongoing need for (mutating) ideologies as ever-new sets of contradictions emerge.
