When literary SOTL scholars present findings about teaching and learning without any context, we fall short on two fronts. First, we don’t provide enough information for others to assess the relevance of our conclusions, exacerbating the criticism of our work as too narrow or not rigorous enough. Next, we revert to a literary approach popular from the 1930s to the 1960s called New Criticism, which most in our discipline have recognized as an incomplete way of viewing texts: it treats a text “as if it were written in a vacuum,” which makes its perspective “inherently flawed” because each work “is always an artifact of the culture that produced it” (Brown and Yarbrough 2005, 214).
