Despite the plausibility of this “ignorant voter” scenario, it turns out that voters in India—including those who are reasonably well-informed—often have very rational reasons for supporting candidates with criminal reputations. Beyond money, in contexts where the rule of law is weak and social divisions are highly salient, politicians can often use their criminality as a badge of honor—a signal of their credibility to protect the interests of their community and its allies, casting themselves as modern-day Robin Hoods operating in a polarized society.
