This encouraged courtiers to try to set up the King with new mistresses. It is thought that Louise de Keroualle's introduction to the King was arranged by Lord Arlington and the French ambassador in order to draw Charles away from Lady Castlemaine, who had kept the French out of her social circle and her apartments in the years before 1670. In return for receiving patronage, a 'CLIENT' was expected to support their patron and give favours in return. However, patronage could also lead to misfortune.
Why was Lo n d o n a fi re ri s k? As we have seen, London was a busy place, full of alleys and crowded wooden houses. The tradition of 'jettying', building each storey of a house out over the street by a few feet, meant that some houses jutted out ten metres at the third storey and people could reach out across the street and shake hands from the upper floors (see Source 1). Fires could easily spread between these wooden houses. Highly flammable goods (oils, ropes, wood stored for fuel, alcohol, gunpowder, flour, leather, paper, spices, wood chips and chemicals for tanning) were stored in warehouses and workshops in tangled streets where many people also had homes.
