16 II Lucien Wolf, in his 'Plea for Anglo-Jewish History' his address as the society'S first President, argued that Anglo-Jewish history was an integral part of England's domestic and overseas history. Above all, Anglo-Jewish history demonstrated the empathy, even the symbiosis, between Jewish Englishmen and Christian Englishmen who both centred their beliefs, religious and political, on the Old Testament. Wolf and the others who defined the Anglo-Jewish heritage asserted passionately that the study of history could reinforce Jewish pride and help secure Jewish continuity.
Writing in 1930, Cecil Roth was amazed to find the neglect of the prized historical record of the Jews of early modem England. Major synagogues such as the Great, the Hambro and the New had lost much material and records were 'disappointingly late in date'. Those that had survived were in poor condition and neglected. Only recently have these limited materials been deposited in the hands of a professional public archiveY Other Jewish records for the early modem period remain in private hands, lacking proper conservation and cataloguing.
