To support this contention the purists distort history and point to alleged examples of such happenings. But a correct reading of history belies the contention. Practically all of the major branches of mathematics were developed to solve scientific problems, and the few that today are pursued for aesthetic satisfaction [51] were originally motivated by real problems. For example, the theory of numbers, if one dates its beginning with the Pythagoreans, was undertaken for the study of nature. Nevertheless, the break from science has widened sharply since about 1900, and today most mathematicians no longer know any science or even care whether their work will ever have any bearing on real problems.
Even loyalty to his institution is not respected. Professors negotiate their own research grants and take them along when they transfer to another institution. In brief, they become denizens of the marketplace. Professors have no more conscience about obligations than has any other group chosen at random. The layman tends to think of research as a genteel, leisurely activity, conducted with an open, disinterested attitude and devoted to the pursuit of truth. Actually it is a fierce battle for survival.
