Chapter 3 addresses these ideas in some detail and you will probably find that those ideas compliment your existing practice. However, if you scored higher on this section of the self-assessment, you may want to pay particular attention to the discussion of using data in problem solving (chapter 4) and to the discussion of initiating and monitoring program adoption and implementation in chapter 3.
On one hand, these results are startling; on the other hand, the fact that they found that 95 percent of the time no cheating had taken place is heartening. Said another way, almost always teachers and school administrators administer high stakes tests honestly. They find other ways to help students learn the material addressed in the test so that they might do well. But are those ways any more purposeful? Traditional Staff Development Efforts Another response to the pressures of accountability has been to provide teachers traditional staff development—lots of it.
We need to state our purpose and embrace it as the compass we will employ to guide us through our problem-solving process. Remembering that purpose relates people—teachers, students, parents, and the community—to the plans and goals we have for the school, we need to publicly commit to what we believe is our reason for educating. A compelling purpose attracts followers and sets the direction for future actions.
