Largely self-educated, Gordon moved West just after the Civil War, settling briefly with her husband in White Plains, Nevada, then permanently in Lodi, California, in the early 1870s. 10 Reviewing her West Coast debut in 1868, the San Francisco Examiner reported that Gordon was “a pleasing speaker, but her doctrines don’t suit these orthodox times just yet. ”11 The Chronicle criticized her identification with Spiritualism, as Gordon had been a noted Spiritualist trance speaker in her youth. ”12 Many early suffragists were sympathetic to Spiritualism, because it was an individualistic form of transcendentalism with a radical feminist critique of organized religion.
